唐 五代 时期的一种说唱文学，内容原为佛经故事，后亦包括历史故事、民间传说等。如 敦煌 石窟中发现的《大目乾连冥间救母变文》、《伍子胥变文》等。近人所编《敦煌变文集》，辑录较为详备。
